What Makes Shiloh Special?

Like many areas throughout the American South, Shiloh, TN, is steeped in history. The area was seen as a hotspot for military activity during the Civil War due to its strategic location on the Tennessee River, providing whichever army controlled the city with a critical transportation hub for supplies. As Union and Confederate troops recognized the benefits of controlling the surrounding areas, a bloody battle in the western theater of the war was on the horizon.

In early April of 1862, as Union soldiers made their way down the Tennessee River, under the command of Ulysses S. Grant, a battle took place. This battle lasted over 2 days, had over 100,000 troops engaged in battle, and resulted in nearly 25,000 casualties. This event would eclipse the total number of American lives lost in all wars combined up to that point. Some months later, another battle took place in nearby Corinth, MS. In each battle, the Union armies would come out as the victors, which was crucial for the North’s overall victory in the war.

Established in 1894, the Shiloh National Military Park in Shiloh, TN, commemorates the bloody battle and the subsequent siege, battle, and occupation of Corinth, MS, at an important railroad junction just south of the TN/MS border. The graves started with wood headboards but were eventually changed out for granite stones. Short, square stones were used for unknown soldiers.

The Shiloh Indian Mounds provides a fascinating look at a Native American town from nearly 800 years ago. The town consists of seven mounds (six rectangular with flat tops and one oval with a round top), all set between two ravines. The town consisted of religious buildings, residences, and more, and the oval-shaped mound served as a burial place for leaders and other important townspeople. What makes this site so special is that it has been left undisturbed, making it one of the only places in the eastern portion of the country where you can view prehistoric houses.
