What Is a Slugburger?

Slugburgers are local favorites around North MS and its neighboring states. Despite the name, slugburgers don’t contain slugs. The name comes from the fact that these tasty burgers were originally sold for only a nickel, for which the term “slug” was slang. While the name might sound strange, the ingredients of this Southern classic are sure to make visitors’ mouths water.

Created by Corinth native John Weeks in 1917, this fan favorite starts with a fried patty that includes a mixture of ground beef and some type of filler. This filler may be potato flakes and flour, soybean grits, breadcrumbs, or cornmeal. The patty is traditionally served on a bun with mustard, onions, and pickles.

The story behind the burger’s use of filler is that its creator wanted to save money and did so by reducing the beef content. This also made the burgers more affordable and added a special, crispy texture, helping them become a crowd-pleaser for over one hundred years.
